These were made from 1/4” Baltic birch plywood. You can get 12 boxes from a 5x5’ sheet of plywood. If you want to make your own you can use the following cut list.
Front: 4-5/8” (W) x 4” (L)
Back: 4-5/8” (W) x 9-3/4” (L)
Bottom: 4-5/8” (W) x 9-3/4” (L)
Sides: 9-1/2” (W) x 9-3/4” (L)
On the front and back, cut a rabbet 1/8” deep on each edge. Setting the fence, on a table saw, at 4-5/16” will leave a 4” internal width. Additionally, this will leave a little extra wood that will need to be trimmed off later. The extra wood is to account for any discrepancies in the thickness of the plywood.
Next, glue the sides to the front and back. Once the glue is dry you can trim the excess away with a router and a flush trim bit or with a block plane. At this point you can glue the bottom to the rest of the box. The bottom is oversized to make it easy to glue. Before gluing the bottom, ensure the bottom edges of the boxes are all in the same plane. If there was any misalignment in the previous glue up it should be addressed at this stage. An easy way to do this is to stick some sand paper down to your table saw and sand all the edges flush. Once the bottom has been glued it can be trimmed flush with the sides. Finally, sand smooth and apply a finish of your choice. I didn’t apply a finish for any of the ones I made. It is such a low use item it didn’t need one IMO. I’m okay if the boxes gain a patina over time.
