  • Offered here is a hand‑built replica of a 16th‑century European block plane, modeled directly after an original held in the MAK Museum in Vienna. This piece was constructed using methods that closely mirror the surviving artifact. It was forged, brazed, fitted, and finished with the working character that defined early tool making.

    The surfaces retain their tool marks and hand‑worked texture. The result is a plane that shows exactly how it was made and remains true to the look and feel of period work.

    This plane is fully functional, but it is foremost a study in Renaissance‑era craft. It’s a working interpretation of a museum piece, built with period methods and details that brings the presence of a Renaissance workshop into your own.

    "Commonly known as dancing-master calipers, many different legged calipers were shop made throughout the 18th and 19th and centuries and into the early 20th century. The calipers get their name from their shape, usually dancing legs, though some show entire silhouettes of ladies or men (and, occasionally, on a risqué example, both). Considered folk art, many dancing-master calipers show the whimsy of their maker: legs bare or stocking clad, female or male, elegant or awkward.
